Why an AC gives no response at all

A tripped breaker is the most common cause we see. If the unit was drawing too much current, often because of a failing capacitor or motor, the breaker cuts power as a safety measure. Resetting it once is fine; if it trips again straight away, that points to an electrical fault that needs a technician rather than repeated resets.

Thermostat problems are the second most common. A thermostat that's lost power, lost its wireless connection to the indoor unit, or simply has dead batteries in the remote will leave the AC looking completely dead even though the unit itself is fine. This is worth checking yourself before booking a callout, it's the cheapest possible fix if it turns out to be the cause.

A wiring fault between the indoor and outdoor units is less common but more serious, and it's a job for a licensed technician rather than a DIY fix, both because it involves mains electrics and because a wrong connection can damage the compressor.

A failed control board is the least common cause, usually only seen in older units, and typically means weighing repair cost against the value of the unit itself.

How we diagnose it
